# Connect your domain to Sitehold

> **Short answer:** Sitehold gives you two DNS records: a TXT record that proves you own the domain and a CNAME that sends visitors to Sitehold. Add both where you manage your domain's DNS. HTTPS starts automatically once they are found. Sitehold never changes your DNS for you.

## Which address to use

- **A subdomain** such as `www.example.com` or `go.example.com` works with every DNS provider. Start here if you are unsure.
- **A bare domain** such as `example.com` needs a provider that supports ALIAS, ANAME or CNAME flattening at the root (`@`). Cloudflare, DNSimple and many others do; some registrars don't.

## The records

For `go.example.com`, Sitehold asks for:

| Type | Name | Value | Why |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| TXT | `_sitehold-challenge.go` | `sitehold-verify=…` | Proves the domain is yours. Sitehold provisions nothing until it sees this. |
| CNAME | `go` | `customers.sitehold.site` | Sends visitors to Sitehold. |

A bare domain uses an ALIAS (or flattened CNAME) at `@` instead of the CNAME. While the certificate is being issued, it may also ask for a `_cf-custom-hostname` TXT record.

Copy the exact values from Sitehold; the token is different for every connection.

## After you add them

Ask your agent to check the domain again, or open it in your Sitehold account. DNS changes can take up to an hour to show up. Once both records are found and the certificate is issued, the domain is ready, and you can give a site an address on it.

## One domain, several pages

A domain can serve one site at `/` and others at paths, such as `/webinar` or `/spring-sale`. The most specific path wins. A site under a path must use relative URLs.

## Common mistakes

- **The TXT name is doubled.** Many DNS panels add your domain automatically. Enter `_sitehold-challenge.go`, not `_sitehold-challenge.go.example.com`.
- **A CAA record blocks the certificate.** If your domain has CAA records, Sitehold tells you which authority to allow.
- **An old record still points elsewhere.** Remove A or AAAA records on the same name before adding the CNAME.
